Breakfast and a quick check of the digital world. This includes a 10 minutes maximum check of my emails to see if there are any urgent issues, and to alert those clients who appreciate it that I’m aware of their overnight communications and am addressing them. Don't let the day take you over: take command of the day on your terms.

Another way I do that is morning exercise: it’s vital for me on every level: physically, mentally, spiritually. Along with the physical and health benefits, it gets the endorphins flowing in my brain. Whether in business or music mode, this is when ideas tend to bloom. If I’m at the gym I’m almost constantly making notes or reminders to myself for ideas or inspirations that occur. Even with my new apartment workouts during #stayathome I’ll still add to my to-do list or jot down quick notes.

And if you’re looking for a diverse, in-home workout regimen, I highly recommend Fitness Blender. They have a huge range of options on Youtube, at all levels of intensity, with and without weights. Having gotten into a mindless routine at the gym, I’m really enjoying the challenge that all their different options have posed.

Ease into the day. Give your brain and your self a chance to settle and center. Avoid devices and social media. Many people I know seem to be on their devices before they’re even out of bed. If you’re going to be your best self that you can be - and therefore the best partner to your clients or colleagues - take a few minutes to let your mind and spirit fully coalesce before admitting the confusion of the world. If you’re a meditator, this is the perfect time. If you have a dog, perfect time for a walk - deviceless. Or just take the time to breathe and think of the day ahead. The world, the news, the latest news and developments, will all be waiting for you.

My own easement in to the day is a Spotify “Wake Up” playlist I turn on as soon as I’m awake. As a musician on the other side of my life, music is an integral part of activating my brain, stimulating and centering me, so for me there's no better way to instigate the possibilities of the days ahead.

What are your routines? What sparks your day to be its best? Share them here so others can be inspired.

Even before the onslaught of the Covid-19 pandemic, U.S. businesses and workers have been increasingly rethinking the idea of a mandatory corporate workspace, and considering operating remotely especially from home. With the pandemic clearly altering the future of workflows, corporate or otherwise, those of us already operating virtually, untethered to a specific location, not only have a leg up in being veterans of this burgeoning situation but can offer some tips on how to thrive in it.

Over the ensuing posts, I'll be offering some of mine accrued over my five years as a virtual administrator. I hope they are of use, or can serve as an inspiration for you to create your own individual routine.
